Mass Update

It's peanut butter jelly time! Oh wait.. no, I mean, it's time for another mass update.

Thanksgiving Eve
A bit frightening, actually. At work on Wednesday, my coworkers informed me that there was a snowstorm heading to the area, and when I checked out the details, they said drifts up to 6 feet in the snow belt. Um, no thank you. I'll take traffic over snow any day. So, as soon as I got out of work, I headed back to my apartment, packed up, and hit the road. A few miles into Pennsylvania on I-80, I saw some brake lights ahead, so I put on the brake a bit, and noticed the car started to slide.. So I eased up, and tried again. That's when I lost control. The car veered right, then left, and before I knew it, the car engaged in a 90-degree spin, leaving my car stopped across both lanes of traffic. Thankfully, the nearest vehicle [ a pickup truck ] was able to stop. I knew I had to get off the road, so I put the gas on.. and for some reason my car when in reverse. At this point, I didn't care, I knew I had to get off.. so, I put on the gas, and my car ended up [ luckily ] on a flat piece of grass with no other obstructions. When I looked down at the dashboard, basically all the lights had lit up [check oil, check engine, etc] I waited for just a bit to calm down and looked around. To the right of me, there was another car pulled over. To my left and just ahead on the other side of the road were two other cars that had clearly been involved in an accident. When I got the courage to continue the trip, I noticed a bunch of "pings" coming from around my car.. It wasn't doing it at the time, but it must have hailed in the region just before I got there. I guess my car couldn't handle the ball-bearings or maybe I hit some black ice. Whatever it was, I was a little shooken up, but I got home OK..

Thanksgiving
Of course it was good to see my parents and sister! Lots of good food and funny stories, as always. Also, a friend of my sister's has a little rabbit named Bella and since she was out of town, my sister and parents were taking care for it. So that was a lot of fun. If they could somehow gentically engineer one that didn't smell, I would love to get a little rabbit for my apartment. :) Over the break I also got to hang out with Paul, which is always entertaining. He's one of about three and a half people that I still keep in touch with from high school.

Ice Skating
Well, Lesley and I ate out at Panera, wandered around Borders, and then went ice skating for a bit the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It was fun, but I'm having a really hard time reading her. I didn't get a good vibe after the date, so I was just going to wait and see if she called... My sister asked about her Wednesday night, so I told my parents about her and then mentioned the "vibe".. they all kind of looked at me strangely and basically said "are you crazy? call her" I guess I'm naive about the initial dating stuff.

So, I left a message with her Thanksgiving.. don't hear back from her for a while, so I assume I was right and she's not interested. Then Monday rolls around and she leaves a message with me.. Tuesday I call, but she's not around.. Finally Wednesday we're both there and we chat for a while... On Friday she sent me a funny email forward, and it looks like we might go out to the movies or something soon. So, it certainly looks like she's at least a little bit interested.. I just can't tell. I kind of wonder if she's sort of like NJ Marisa - and isn't quite sure what she's looking for yet.

At the very least, it's nice to know someone my age in the area that I can hang out with. We'll see how things go.

Drew Carey and the Improv Allstars
Oh man.. I got to see the show this weekend, and was a little nervous. The area was getting hit with some snow that was the edge of an Alberta clipper. After my last trip, I was certainly hesitant to do any longer-distance driving. Especially at night, and to a place I've never been before. Most of it was on the highway, which wasn't bad, although my car did slide a little bit on the exit ramp [which was not plowed at all] It was very easy to get to, and I would like to go back and explore the city a little bit.

Anyway, on to the show. My seat was FRONT ROW, but it was pushed all the way to the right - so it wasn't perfect, but it was dang close. Found out that when Drew's not on TV he has the mouth of a sailor. When he noticed some kids in the audience, he was asking if either of them played Grand Theft Auto.. the older [15] said he did, and the younger [10] watched. So after that he said "Well, f*ck, f*ck,f*ck,f*ck-diddy-f*ck then" .etc..

A really weird part about the show was shortly after this when a guy from the back of the arena started to heckle Drew. Not sure why you would pay money to come do that, but oh well.

The rest of the show was hilarious! It was Drew, Kathy Kinney [Mimi], Greg Proops, Chip Esten, Jeff Davis, Sean Masterson [only seen him on the Green Screen show] and Jonathan Mangum [appeared on the Drew Carey show too] . My favorite skit was when they did Jeopardy... Some of the characters were generic, but the really funny ones were Kathy who played as Mimi [really hamming it up], Chip who played Napoleon Dynamite [complete with dance scene], and Jeff Davis who played Christopher Walken [complete with awkward pauses]

There was a losing battle between Chip and the rest of the audience over the Steelers vs Browns debate. I'm glad I've lived here long enough to understand these jokes. :)

So between seeing Wayne Brady when I first moved to NJ, later seeing Colin Mocharie and Brad Sherwood, and now this Drew Carey show, I've basically seen them all. Well, all but Ryan Stiles. I wonder what happened to him?

Upcoming Attractions
At work we're having a white elephant gift exchange on Thursday so that should be fun. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the morale at ICI is completely different from that of AT&T

Rather than put a Christmas tree up in my apartment [I'm not sure where it would go] I think I can probably put it on my balcony. Wouldn't have to bother with any ornaments - just a couple lights and it's good to go. I was driving by earlier today, and you can definitely see it from the main road too. In fact.. I think I might do that right now.. Cya!

Ohio Update

Um, can you say, overdue?

So, this isn't unusual, but I'm way behind in updating this.

Coldplay concert
Definitely awesome! Every song I wanted to hear, they played. Our seats were OK, but during the last song Chris Martin ran up pretty close to where we were at to sing. Some of the technology they used during the show was a little hokey and bizarre, but overall definitely a great concert. Probably my favorite concert, although Matchbox 20 comes in a very close second.

The Movers
Well, after the Coldplay concert, I got back to State College on Sunday. Just after church (probably around 6:15pm) I get a call from the movers. They're delivering tomorrow (Labor Day).. Umm.. what?? I had planned on staying with the family until late Monday.. but no, now I have to get up at 5am to drive back to Ohio. On the way, I picked up a nice speeding ticket (going 79 in 65 zone..), and literally minutes after I got there the movers called, saying they were close. Anyway, the truck BARELY fit into the small parking area, but it worked out. Amazingly, EVERYTHING the movers packed in Jersey made it to Ohio. The only damage was one bookcase, which was ruined (only like $20), and a small ding in the wood on my futon. So, I give them credit for that - I was fully expecting my TV to be missing.

The Job
Well, I started working at ICI Paints on Sept 12th - the culture there is just SO much different than at AT&T. First off, it's a lot smaller, so it has less of the corporate red tape. It's a cubicle environment, which I'm still trying to adjust to. Everyone there is really laid-back, and most important: entertaining. Every day at work, I'm laughing at something, which helps so much. The work is pretty much identical to the stuff I was doing at AT&T, with the exception that there's no overtime at all [well, I'm sure there will be at some point, but not yet] They've had a lot of fun activities recently.. and because I donated to the United Way, my name's in a raffle for the next four weeks, in which I might be able to win a personal day.. That'd be great, because I have nothing yet, and would like to take another day off around Christmas.

Penn State
Holy cow, Penn State is awesome this year. Some of the LIFE House gang got together for the Homecoming football game. We camped out at a KOA campground again, although this time in tents [very cold]. It was a great game (ie we won) During one of the commercial breaks, the Nittany Lion and two members of the band did the entire choreographed dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller". It was hilarious and definitely a highlight. Had an awesome time with the gang again - we'll have to meet up more often.

The Apartment
Both a blessing and a curse. :) I have so much stuff here, that I have little need to go out for entertainment, and with the winter approaching, I think I'll be doing a little hibernating. With the washer & dryer & dishwasher I think I've gotten a bit lazier about other chores too. Oh well, I like it. Definitely nice and quiet which is what I wanted.

Drew Carey
Well first off, Drew Carey grew up around here (I think Parma, hence the song "Moon over Parma bring my love to me tonight...") Anyway, Drew Carey and the Improv All-Stars are coming to Cleveland and I decided to get a ticket. The show's on Dec 2nd, and I have a FRONT ROW seat. Should be a blast. :) Who knows, maybe I'll get called up on stage.. heh.

Alright, that's it for now. I'll try to update more frequently.
